The Reds’ Brazilian striker has rarely been prolific over the course of his career but is considered to offer much more than end product at Anfield
Roberto Firmino is a “world class” frontman, says Jurgen Klopp, with statistics of little importance when it comes to an unselfish “connector” in Liverpool’s plans.
A Brazil international striker at Anfield has rarely been prolific throughout his career to date, with only two 20-plus goal seasons taken in.
He is, however, about much more than end product in the final third of the field and Liverpool have embraced those qualities throughout the 28-year-old’s time on Merseyside, with his work rate fitting Klopp’s footballing philosophy perfectly.
The Reds boss admits as much, telling JOE of a key component in his well-oiled machine: “He’s a connector.
“It’s pretty rare that you meet a person like Bobby who is so selfless and unselfish.
“He’s like, ball there, ball there, pass the ball and he’s really happy about it. Then he realises ‘well I didn’t score for four or five weeks actually’.”
Firmino has registered 11 goals in the 2019-20 campaign, with all but one of those coming on the road.
He finally broke his Anfield duck in Liverpool’s last outing before competitive football was shut down amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Much had been made of Firmino’s barren run on home soil, but Klopp says he never had any concerns.
The German tactician added: “But it’s unbelievable [his unselfishness], it doesn’t matter.
“No really, he’s world class.
“Just a sensationally good guy.”
Firmino has taken in 235 appearances for Liverpool in total, with the target found on 77 occasions.
Liverpool took the decision to part with the Northern Irishman a matter of months after Firmino arrived, with his qualities fully embraced once Klopp was handed the reins.
Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup success has since been savoured by the Reds, while they are now waiting to discover whether a 30-year wait for domestic title glory will be brought to an end in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.
