Luis Suarez has been showing his age at times with Atletico Madrid, but is still joint top scorer in LaLiga with Lionel Messi and can hurt Chelsea

Luis Suarez is 34 and not quite the player he once was – but Chelsea have been warned they are still facing one of the deadliest goalscorers in world football.

Suarez was made surplus to requirements by Barca boss Ronald Koeman in the summer and was allowed to join Atletico Madrid for a minimal fee.

Luis Suarez has scored 16 goals this season in LaLiga

In LaLiga this season, the Uruguay international is the joint-top scorer with 16 goals alongside his former teammate Lionel Messi.

Suarez terrorised defences in the Premier League at Liverpool before joining Barcelona nd went on to become their third all-time top scorer with 198 goals.

He comes up against Chelsea this evening in the Champions League – with commentary of the game live on talkSPORT.

Spanish football expert Alex Kirkland told talkSPORT that Suarez has started to show his age but there are still moments when he comes alive in the box.

“It’s been an incredible season for Luis Suarez,” Kirkland said. “Pretty much given away by Barcelona as being past it and now he’s top scorer in LaLiga.

“It’s true to say those goals have dried up just a little bit, he hasn’t scored in the last few games.

“When you watch Luis Suarez these days it is interesting. You watch him for a lot of the game and he really shows his age.

“The movement isn’t what it was, at times it looks like he’s really struggling. We know he’s had knee injuries over the years and they’ve taken their toll.

“You watch him sometimes and you understand why some people might say ‘he’s not the player he was’.

“Then all of a sudden he bursts into life. When the ball is in the box he’s there in the right place at the right time, as he always has been throughout his career and he’s still one of the best goalscorers in the business.

“It has dried up for him in the last week or two but nonetheless if there’s a chance in the Chelsea box there are still very few players you’d want that ball to fall to ahead of Luis Suarez.”

The Champions League clash between Atletico and Chelsea will be played in Bucharest due to travel restrictions on people entering Spain from Britain.

The Spanish giants are top of LaLiga but on a poor run of form while Chelsea are unbeaten in the first six games of Thomas Tuchel’s regime.

“It’s difficult to predict,” Kirkland added. “For all the circumstances, it’s without precedent and to some extent both form and European pedigree go out the window a little bit.

“I think they’ll know Atletico have been the best team in Spain this season and will know how dangerous Atletico Madrid are in the Champions League when you get to the knockout stages, just think back to what happened at Anfield just over a year ago.

“Atletico are very experienced in this competition, Diego Simeone is very experienced in this competition.

“In knockout games, in tight games with few chances you always give Atletico Madrid a good chance and I think Chelsea will be aware of that.”
