Darren Bent didn’t even hesitate when asked who would claim the Premier League Golden Boot this season.
Having bagged more than 100 top-flight goals, Bent knows a thing or two about finding the back of the net – and fully expects Cristiano Ronaldo to top the charts this season.
Despite turning 37 later this campaign, the Manchester United star has already silenced his doubters upon returning to Old Trafford, with four goals in three matches in all competitions.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, one of the leading goalscorers in football history, already has a Premier League Golden Boot to his name after bagging 31 goals in the 2007/08 season.
Fourteen years on, he appears set to challenge once again, with no sign of the goals drying up any time soon.
Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah are likely to provide the challenge, while last year’s winner Harry Kane hasn’t looked anything like himself at Tottenham so far this season.
“Lukaku will be close and you’ve always got to count Salah in as well,” former Tottenham striker Bent told the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“But Ronaldo is deadly. It’s not only that he’s got four goals in three games. It’s the number of shots and big chances.
“He looks like he’s going to take penalties. He could’ve easily had a hat-trick against West Ham, should’ve had a penalty.
“When you’re that sharp and that hungry to score goals like Ronaldo, and his movement is so good, I can only see Ronaldo winning the Golden Boot.”
And the bookies agree with him.
All of them have Ronaldo as favourite to finish top of the pile after his fast start to the season.
