The retired footballer explains why the Kenyan skipper would have considered a move to Serie A before finally hanging his boots
Xavier states the Harambee Stars captain should have considered a move to Serie A before deciding to retire or not.
“If he would have got a chance to play in Italy, it would have been the best one before he finally retires,” Xavier told Goal.
“Wanyama can still do it in an intensive league and Italy perhaps should have been his next destination.”
Wanyama started falling down the pecking order fast when he failed to fully recover from niggling knee and back injuries as Mauricio Pochettino and now Josee Mourinho started freezing him out of the first team.
“The writing was already on the wall for Wanyama as he was no longer a key figure for Tottenham Hotspur,” explained Xavier.
“He has been in a good team [Tottenham Hotspur] which has helped him achieve what he has so far and it is just the right moment for him to make a move.”
Xavier explained why he also feels the Montreal Impact move was the best for the former Nairobi City Stars and AFC Leopards midfielder.
“If he would have stayed at Tottenham longer, the next thing you would have heard is he has been loaned to a small team and that will be the beginning of the end for his career just like what happened to [Emmanuel] Adebayor [former Arsenal and Manchester City striker],” concluded the tactician.
“That would not be the right way to end a career like Wanyama’s.”
