Watch Oleksandr Usyk stand and slug it out with 6ft 6ins Joe Joyce at World Series of Boxing, proving he can compete with heavyweights the size of Anthony Joshua

As well as being one of the most colourful characters in boxing, Oleksandr Usyk is without a doubt one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

The Ukrainian cleaned out the cruiserweight division in devastating fashion, before knocking out Tony Bellew in Manchester and stopping Chazz Witherspoon in his professional heavyweight debut.

Usyk overcame Derek Chisora in his last heavyweight test and is now set to challenge Anthony Joshua for the world titles on Saturday night.

Although his professional record may include just two heavyweight bouts, the 33-year-old spent a portion of his amateur career fighting much larger men.

Prior to entering the paid ranks, Usyk helped team Ukraine Otamens come second in the 2013 World Series of Boxing by winning all six of his bouts in the heavyweight division.

As part of this competition, he went to war with Joe Joyce.

Before winning a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Joyce was part of the British Lionhearts team and faced the irrepressible Usyk.

Joyce was given a thorough examination by the slick southpaw and ate a couple of heavy shots, although he did manage to land several of his own.

Speaking at the time after Ukraine qualified for the final, Usyk said: “Personally, I enjoyed my performance against Medzhidov. It was a challenging fight and I think I did well.

“He was my toughest opponent but I have to say that Joyce of the Lionhearts proved a tough nut to crack as well.”
